Helpful Notes about
plotting from CAD files
Option 1; PDF files
The most common and trouble free way to share
and print files from your CAD system is through the use of PDF
files. To create PDF files see information that relates to your
particular CAD program. PDF stands for Portable Document File
and was invented by a company called Adobe. See www.adobe.com
PDF files should contain all font, image and line weight information
for accurate printing.
Option
2; HPGL/2 plot files
HPGL stands for Hewlett Packard Graphics Language.
(2 is the version) HPGL/2 files are commonly known as plot or
print files. They can be created by some CAD programs and by
Microsoft Windows applications if a suitable printer or printer
driver is installed, which you will have if you have ever printed
to a wide format HP printer. HPGL/2 files contain all font, image and line weight information
for accurate printing.
Option
3; DWF files
DWF stands for Design Web Format. These files
should not be confused with DWG and DXF files. DWF is a trade
marked file sharing system developed by Autodesk who make AutoCAD.
See http://usa.autodesk.com
DWF files contain all font, image and line weight information
for accurate printing.
Option
4; DWG and DXF files
DWG and DXF are the file extensions commonly
used when saving and sharing CAD drawings but they do not carry
all font, line weight and special fill information and are not
particularly suitable for anyone to print from. A distinction
should be made between these files, which are the actual files
that CAD applications use to store drawings, and print or plot
files.
Prints from DWG and DXF will have thin
uniform line thickness and may not contain all the information
required.
Summary
PDF and DWF files are used throughout the world
to share, view and print CAD files. HPGL/2 files are used to print
(or plot) drawings. DWG and DXF are native file formats that CAD
programs read and write to, and from.
At Microfilm Digital Print we prefer you to provide PDF files for printing.

Leaders in Plan Printing
In 1970 Microfilm was the first bureau to offer
xerographic plan printing in Christchurch. In the early 1990’s
we began wide format colour copying and we continue to be proud
of the lead we take in this area. |
